About Anthony J Meyer
Dr. Anthony J. (A.J.) Meyer is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine, where he serves as Core Faculty for Undergraduate Medical Education, the Emergency Medicine Residency, and the EMS Fellowship. Originally from the Midwest, Dr. Meyer began his career in emergency services as a paramedic with Iowa, gaining extensive prehospital experience that continued throughout his medical school years at Creighton University. He earned his B.S. in Emergency Medical Services summa cum laude and his M.D. from Creighton University, completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (where he served as EMS Section Chief Resident), and finished a dedicated EMS Fellowship at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. Board-certified in both Emergency Medicine and the EMS subspecialty by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Meyer joined UF in 2023 and currently serves as Medical Director of the Levy County Department of Public Safety. He provides clinical care across UF Health’s emergency settings and advances prehospital systems, quality improvement, and event medicine, including coverage at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. His career path—from hands-on paramedic work in the Midwest to fellowship-trained academic leadership—reflects a lifelong commitment to bridging prehospital EMS with hospital-based emergency medicine for seamless, high-quality patient care.

Teaching Philosophy
Dr. Anthony J. (A.J.) Meyer’s teaching philosophy is rooted in experiential, interprofessional, and learner-centered education that equips future physicians, residents, fellows, and prehospital providers with the clinical reasoning, procedural skills, and systems knowledge essential for high-acuity emergency and EMS environments. As Core Faculty for the UF Emergency Medicine Residency, Undergraduate Medical Education, and EMS Fellowship—and Co-Director of the Common & Advanced Procedures Course—he enjoys delivering hands-on skills training alongside residents, medical students, paramedics, and EMTs through PGY-1 and PGY-2 simulations, ACLS bootcamps, suturing sessions, thoracostomy workshops, cadaver labs, toxicology escape rooms, and patient immobilization stations. He is a good listener who makes a deliberate effort to personally get to know each learner, understand their individual strengths and weaknesses, and deliver specific, tailored feedback that supports their growth. He emphasizes active facilitation through mock oral boards, small-group resuscitation reviews, mentorship of residents and medical students (including career-track advising and research guidance), and didactic lectures on EMS system design, agitated patient management, and headaches. Believing that effective education bridges classroom theory with real-world application, Dr. Meyer fosters a supportive environment that encourages curiosity, teamwork across professions, reflective practice through quality improvement projects, and lifelong learning—ultimately preparing learners to deliver compassionate, evidence-based care while advancing the field of emergency medicine and prehospital systems.

Dr. Anthony J. (A.J.) Meyer provides comprehensive clinical emergency medicine services at the University of Florida Health system. He practices in all four clinical settings: the UF Health Shands Emergency Room/Trauma Center (the area’s only Level I trauma facility), the UF Health Pediatric Emergency Room at Shands Children’s Hospital, the UF Health Kanapaha Freestanding Emergency Center, and the UF Health Springhill Freestanding Emergency Center. As Medical Director for the Levy County Department of Public Safety, he leads continuous quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives for EMS operations, ensuring evidence-based protocols, timely responses, and optimal prehospital-to-hospital transitions for patients across rural and underserved communities in north central Florida. Board-certified in both Emergency Medicine and the EMS subspecialty, Dr. Meyer integrates advanced resuscitation skills, trauma management, and prehospital expertise into his daily practice, while also serving as an event medicine physician at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
