About Nicholas G Maldonado

Dr. Nicholas G. Maldonado MD, FACEP is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine and Associate Program Director for the UF Emergency Medicine Residency program in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Maldonado was born in the Bronx, New York. After graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music & Art and Performing Arts, he attended a 7-year combined B.S./M.D. program at the Sophie B. Davis School of Biomedical Education in Manhattan, at the City College of New York. He completed his medical school training at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He later attended the Harvard-Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, where he served as chief resident. After residency, Dr. Maldonado accepted a full-time clinical faculty position at the University of Florida in 2014, served as Assistant Program Director from 2016-2022, and currently serves as Associate Program Director.

Dr. Maldonado served on the UF College of Medicine’s Faculty Council and as a Faculty Council Representative on the College of Medicine’s Curriculum Committee. Regionally, he served as faculty for the Florida College of Emergency Physicians/Florida Emergency Medicine Foundation’s Emergency Medicine Written Board Review Course. Nationally, he serves on the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine’s Education, Awards and Program Committees and is the current co-director of SAEM’s chief resident forum.

He completed ACEP’s Teaching fellowship in 2018 and has been recognized institutionally and nationally as an educator (awarded the University of Florida College of Medicine Exemplary Teacher Award [2015-2019, 2021-2023], University of Florida Emergency Medicine Residency Attending Award for Excellence in Teaching [2015, 2019], and the American College of Emergency Physicians National Emergency Medicine Junior Faculty Teaching Award [2020]).

Dr. Maldonado co-authored the emergency medicine pocket guide, “Pocket Emergency Medicine, 3rd Edition” and has been an annual contributor to Critical Decisions in Emergency Medicine’s “LLSA Article Reviews” since 2018. His clinical interests include difficult airway management and difficult airway response teams in the emergency department. His education interests include graduate medical education, curriculum development and design, and experiential learning and simulation.
