Welcome to EM Shadowing

We are excited that you are considering a future career in Emergency Medicine! This presentation will prepare you for your upcoming shadowing experience and hopefully answer any questions you may have.

How do I sign-up for shadowing?

Step 1

Submit your documents

Submit the
required documents through the Shadowing Request form

Step 2

Complete the DocuSign

We will assist you in identifying a faculty member to shadow. Then a DocuSign will be sent to you and
the available faculty member to finish out the paperwork process.

Step 3

Wait for your approval notice

After the DocuSign signatures are received all of your information is submitted to UF Observe for
final processing. This can take up to 10-14 business days. You will receive an email from UF Observe when you are approved!

How long can I shadow for?

You can shadow a physician for up to 8 hours a day over the course of a 30 day period. If you’d like to shadow again students are more than welcome to submit an updated Request to Observe Form.

What should I wear?

Shadowers are NOT permitted to wear scrubs or a lab coat. Business casual is the approved attire for a shadower. Along with your patient care observer badge.

What will I be doing?

Observers can expect to:

  • Observe patient-physician interactions in the Emergency Department
  • Witness discussion of patient interactions with faculty and other members of the medical team including residents, nurses, and medical students
  • Participate in didactic activities
  • Observe medical resuscitations
  • Please note a shadow may not participate or provide any patient care even under supervision

Can I receive a letter of recommendation at the end of this experience?

It is important to note that providers will NOT provide you with letter of recommendation. However, we hope that this experience will lead you to a career in EM.

Can I review my experience?

Yes! We would love to hear from you. Please email EMED-UFEMShadowing@ad.ufl.edu.
