Ultrasound Elective Rotation

Course Goals 

Emergency Medicine Ultrasound at the Univ of Florida – The mission of this rotation is to train future emergency physicians in the basics of emergency limited ultrasonography and to help them become proficient emergency sonographers who will use and incorporate their knowledge to positively enhance patient care. We will focus on bedside echo, aorta, gallbladder, EFAST, thoracic, renal, pelvic, central and peripheral venous access and soft tissue. Other studies include assessment of volume status, foreign body location, musculoskeletal, nerve blocks, ocular, dvt, etc.

Course Objectives

  1.  Demonstrate collegial; constructive behaviors with patients; staff; and colleagues.
  2. Direct observation in ED setting and via word of mouth from other faculty/residents. Informal question and answer sessions.
  3. Scanning patients properly.
  4. Understanding the technique of how to scan a patient properly and how to explain this to them.
  5. Achieve fundamental knowledge for key areas: Basics of ultrasound physics, orientation and use of machine; Indications for each limited ultrasound exam; key views needed for each exam for completeness/billing purposes; bedside scanning and interpretation in each clinical scenario with emergency medicine diagnoses.
  6. Direct observation in ED/practicums, case presentation, and informal question and answer sessions.
  7. Demonstrate independence in assimilating medical knowledge based on clinical problems encountered in the ED and learning to incorporate this using ultrasound at the bedside, becoming proficient with bedside scanning and interpretation with each exam and the indications for each.
  8. Interact with patients, faculty, and residents in an effective, collaborative manner.
  9. Direct observation in ED.
