Common & Advanced Procedures Elective Rotation

Course Goals

The overarching goal of this elective is to provide students with a well-rounded and comprehensive experience in procedures. The two components of this elective include instruction and practice of common procedures on simulators as well as direct observation of procedures commonly ordered by physicians. The specific goal is to improve competence and performance in the following domains: clinical skills, practical procedures, teamwork, patient management, and decision-making. Through the observation of procedures commonly ordered by residents and practicing physicians, students will gain more understanding of the indications and limitations for a particular procedure, as well as gain insight into what a patient involved in the procedure has to endure.

Students will be able to learn through, rather than from, the mistakes they and others in the group make. By providing a controlled environment for students to learn procedures, it may be possible to reduce future medical errors, which would enhance patient safety and improve overall medical care.

Each procedure will identify the targeted audience, the indications, steps of the procedure, pre- and post-procedure management, complications, and how to avoid them.
