Section of Global Health
The Section of Global Health within the University of Florida’s Department of Emergency Medicine is focused on promoting emergency care globally. In partnership with institutions around the world, we assist in developing emergency/critical care capacity, conduct research and provide a wide range of educational services to faculty, fellows, residents, and students both here at UF and at our international partner sites. The Section operates a Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program with multiple partner sites in Haiti and Ghana that include hospitals, but also ambulance/EMS services and the Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services.
Fellowship
Our one-year global emergency medicine fellowship (with an option for a second year with a Master’s degree) sees fellows graduate with expertise in clinical care in resource-restrained environments, mastery of culturally-appropriate quality education and significant exposure to global health research.
Leadership
The Section has faculty & staff from diverse backgrounds, with unique subspecialty skills and an excellent scholarly track record.
Operational Medicine
The Section of Global Health also supports a rotation opportunity for fellows and faculty interested in Operational Medicine. The rotation is designed primarily for our Global Emergency Medicine and EMS Fellows, and focuses on trauma management education as well as exposure to disaster and mass casualty planning. During this rotation, fellows will deploy with the support of US federal agencies abroad. In addition to learning about regional and local medical practices at international sites, they will also gain experience in the delivery of advanced education in austere settings, and translate academic theory to real world scenarios.
Global Health Ultrasound
Our Section has built a reputation for ultrasound education in low- and middle-income countries, often accompanied by research activities, as well. We have trained hundreds of physicians, primarily from and within West Africa and Haiti. Currently, we assist in the development of an ultrasound training curriculum for emergency medicine residents in Accra, Ghana.
Global Health Research
The Section supports a variety of global health-related research projects, with students, residents, fellows and faculty involved at multiple levels. We place great value on an equal partnership with our international colleagues. The spectrum of our research ranges from small review projects to federally-funded clinical research, such as the MotoMeds project.
