UF Emergency Medicine Celebrates 2025 Faculty Promotions

The University of Florida Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to recognize four of our esteemed faculty members who have been promoted, effective July 1, 2025. These well-earned promotions reflect years of commitment to clinical excellence, education, leadership, and academic achievement.

Promoted to Clinical Associate Professor

Colleen K. Gutman, M.D.

Colleen K. Gutman, M.D.

Dr. Colleen Gutman is a Gainesville native who joined the University of Florida faculty in 2020. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Florida before earning her medical degree from Columbia University. She completed her pediatric residency and served as chief resident at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington, followed by a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at Emory University.

Dr. Gutman’s research focuses on clinician communication in pediatric emergency settings, with the goal of improving patient and family-centered care. She is an affiliate faculty member with the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) STELAR node and serves as an Assistant Editor for the Joint Commission Journal of Quality and Patient Safety. She currently holds a K23 career development award from the National Institutes of Health, supporting her impactful research in pediatric emergency medicine.

Jason M. Jones, M.D., FACEP, FAEMS

Jason M. Jones, M.D., FACEP, FAEMS

Dr. Jason Jones completed both his Emergency Medicine residency and EMS fellowship at the University of Florida and joined the UF clinical faculty in 2014. Dr. Jones has held numerous leadership roles, including EMS Division Chief and Fellowship Director, and EMS Director of the UF Health Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit. He also serves as Medical Director for several regional EMS agencies and programs. His primary interests lie in prehospital and emergency care, with research and operational focuses on airway management, non-invasive ventilation, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes.

Nicholas G. Maldonado, M.D., FACEP

Nicholas G. Maldonado, M.D., FACEP

Dr. Nicholas Maldonado joined the UF Emergency Medicine faculty in 2014 and currently serves as Associate Program Director for the residency program, playing a key role in resident education and leadership. A nationally recognized educator, Dr. Maldonado has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Florida College of Medicine Exemplary Teacher Award and the American College of Emergency Physicians Junior Faculty Teaching Award. He completed the ACEP Teaching Fellowship and is co-author of Pocket Emergency Medicine, 3rd Edition. His academic interests include graduate medical education, experiential learning, curriculum development, and simulation. Clinically, he is particularly focused on difficult airway management and enhancing airway response capabilities within the emergency department.

Meredith C. Thompson, M.D., M.A.Ed., FACEP

Meredith C. Thompson, M.D., M.A.Ed., FACEP

Dr. Meredith Thompson joined the University of Florida faculty in 2018 after completing her medical degree, emergency medicine residency, and a fellowship in medical education at the University of Virginia, where she also served as chief resident. With a strong commitment to medical education, Dr. Thompson currently serves as Interim Vice Chair of Education and Interim Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Her scholarly interests include trainee wellness, faculty job satisfaction, curriculum innovation, simulation, and entrustable professional activities (EPAs). She is dedicated to advancing education and supporting learners and faculty across the department.
