UF Department of Emergency Medicine in Accra, Ghana

Torben K. Becker is an Assistant Professor, Program Director for the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship and 2021 Junior Faculty International Educator of the Year Winner for the College of Medicine. Dr. Becker is board certified in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care and Emergency Medical Services and serves as Affiliate Faculty for the UF Center for African Studies. He is Faculty Academic Manager for numerous cooperative agreements in Haiti and Ghana, where he and his team provide training for physicians, students, nurses, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs).

Dr. Becker recently sponsored three Memoranda of Understanding in Accra, Ghana and Port-au-Prince, Haiti —with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana Armed Forces Medical Services, and the HERO Ambulance. These agreements are used to conduct advanced emergency care and ultrasound courses for emergency clinicians at these partner institutions. In the past, Dr. Becker has worked with similar institutions in Ghana and Haiti to train physicians and EMTs, mentor on modern trauma care, and, in 2018, donated 20 ventilators received from the Alachua County Department of Health to a hospital in Ghana, which became invaluable tools during the COVID-19 pandemic.
