Emergency Medical Services

 

The Department of Emergency Medicine takes an active interest in EMS, and sees the role of emergency physicians as vital to the provision of pre-hospital care of the highest quality. Several faculty members have special expertise and experience in various sizes and various types of EMS systems.

Dr. Bruce Goldfeder completed a fellowship in EMS in New York City, and remains active in EMS as the chairman of the Alachua County EMS Advisory Committee.

Dr. David Meurer has first hand experience in EMS having formerly worked as an EMT, and then as a paramedic in both rural and suburban systems. He also acts as one of the departments experts in the medical response to hazardous materials incidents, as well as agricultural accidents.

Dr. Liam Holtzman served as Assistant Medical Director for the US Secret Service and Deputy Medical Director of US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in support of their tactical teams.  He also completed a fellowship in tactical EMS. 

ShandsCair, the premiere aeromedical service in Florida is based at Shands-UF and offers both pre-hospital and inter-facility advanced services, including transport of aortic balloon pump patients as well as those with ventricular assist devices. ShandsCair vehicles include helicopter, fixed wing jet, as well as, ground ambulances. Opportunities to ride-along as an observer are available to those who rotate as a resident or medical student with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Shands-UF.
