About the Department of Emergency Medicine
The University of Florida Emergency Department in Gainesville Florida enjoys a reputation of excellence. Faculty and staff provide medical care 24/7 to 45,000 patients in the North-Central Florida area, as well as, medical direction for ShandsCair Medical Flight Team, Alachua County Fire Rescue, NASA Medical Team and the Shands Hospital of Gainesville Emergency Department.
Shands Hospital is the only Burn center and Trauma level I center in Northern Florida and enjoys a catchement area spanning 11 counties. Currently our department is a 12,300 square foot patient care area with 32 beds and three different acuity halls.
In 2009, a new Emergency Department will open in the new Cancer Hospital built across the street from the current location. This space will be 37,000 square feet and have 66 beds available for patient care, as well as, a state of the art trauma care center.
